STATEMENT OF DOCTRINE
We believe the Bible containing the 66 books of the Old and New Testaments is the Word of God and without error in the original writings. That is, the men who wrote the Bible were fully and uniquely inspired by God so that the words of the original manuscripts were the very words God wanted them to write. Thus the teachings of the Bible are infallible. In regard to God’s way of salvation and to the faith and conduct of God’s people, the Bible is the only authority, the complete revelation of the truth God wanted revealed to them. There is no other writing in existence which can rightly be called the Word of God, and there will not be any other. It is the responsibility of every Christian to believe God’s Word and live according to its teachings.
We believe that God has revealed the truth about Himself in His Word, the Bible. Besides the God of the Bible there is no God at all. He made the universe and upholds it with His power. He is infinitely perfect in power, wisdom, love, justice, holiness, and all other of His attributes. This one God exists as three persons named in the Bible as the Father, His Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. Each of these three partakes fully and eternally in the Divine nature and their oneness is so perfect that there are not three Gods but one God only. Each of the three is involved in saving men.
The Father in the fullness of His wisdom and love planned the redemption and salvation of men and sent His Son to accomplish it. He now grants salvation to all who come to Him through Christ and works all things together for good for those who love Him and who are called according to His purpose.
THE SON OF GOD:
The son of God Jesus Christ, became man, being born of the virgin Mary. His conception was brought about without a human father by the creative power of the Holy Spirit. His human nature was real, perfect and sinless. In Him God’s nature and ideal human nature were perfectly united. He was (and is) the God-man, one person with two natures in perfect harmony. He lived a completely sinless life. He died on the cross as God’s appointed sacrifice for sin; He died in our place, as our substitute, taking on Himself the punishment of sin which we deserved. He rose bodily from the dead and showed Himself alive by many sure proofs. He ascended into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. There He prays for His people. He is our High Priest and Advocate, and the only Mediator between God and man. He is also our Example in the holy life He lived on earth, and we are to follow His steps.
THE HOLY SPIRIT:
The Holy Spirit is a Divine person just as the Father and the Son are. He was always active in the world, but came in a new way after Christ’s ascension, on the day of Pentecost, to live permanently with God’s people and fill them with Himself. The Holy Spirit gives new spiritual life to those who trust in Christ, baptizing them into the true church, called in the New Testament ‘Christ’s body’. This is true of all believers. The Holy Spirit equips us for God’s service and gives power for holy living. He leads us, helps us, teaches us, shows us the truth of Christ, and glorifies Christ in all of this, and in every way. The Holy Spirit lives in all who have received Christ as Lord and Savior. He fills with Himself all who obey God and trust God for that fullness. He gives to every believer at least one spiritual gift or ability with which to serve God. No particular gift or ability (such as tongues) is the evidence of His fullness or baptizing work. There is no particular spiritual gift or ability that He gives to all believers and that every one of them must have. The Holy Spirit also convicts men of sin, reveals to them the truth of Christ’s Gospel, and enables them to trust in Christ.
We believe that the first human beings, Adam and Eve, were a special creation of God and were created in the image of God. That is, they resembled God in some very specific ways. They possessed a spiritual nature and were morally responsible beings. They disobeyed God and became sinners. All human beings are their descendants and have been born with a sinful nature (except for Christ whose human nature was produced in a miraculous way.) Men are lost because of their sins, disobedience, and unbelief and under the wrath of God. They need forgiveness and a new nature. They need to be brought to God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Only then can they escape the just condemnation of God and partake of the high destiny God has planned for man.
We believe that forgiveness, a new nature, and everything else that relates to salvation from start to finish, comes by God’s grace alone. Because Christ suffered and died and rose again for us, God fully forgives us, counts us righteous, gives us a new nature, and makes us His children. This is altogether the gift of God. None of it comes by birth to Christian parents, good works, ceremonies, ordinances, or human effort, or human merit of any kind. It is all given freely to those who turn from their sins to God and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ alone. Salvation means that believers will eventually become like Christ, completely sinless and perfect. This is not attained during their present earthly life but is the goal toward which they move.
We believe that the Church which is the Body of Christ and the Temple of God, is composed of all those (and only of those) who have by faith personally received Christ as Lord and Savior. Christ alone is the Head of this Church. In this Church every believer is a priest and each one is to offer the only kinds of sacrifice God now accepts from men - the body as a living sacrifice, praise, doing good, sharing with others, and such like.
The local church should be a visible expression of the Body of Christ, a united and holy fellowship of believers who meet together for worship, instruction, and mutual help and encouragement, where each member is concerned for the spiritual welfare and physical well-being of every other member, and all live and serve for the glory of God. The localchurch must also be concerned with reaching the unsaved near and far with the Gospel of Christ. It does not exist for its own sake but for God and for others.
We believe the apostles of Christ taught the observance of only two ordinances for the Church - baptism and the Lord’s table. Neither conveys spiritual life to those who partake. Christ Himself is the only channel of grace. Baptism is a public testimony of our union with Christ. The act of baptism saves no one.
The Lord’s table is symbolic. The elements are not changed into anything else. They represent Christ’s body and blood given for us on the cross which we are to remember with thanksgiving until He comes again. Only those who have already received Christ as Lord and Savior should partake of the Lord’s table.
We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ will return bodily from heaven at the end of this age.
RESURRECTION AND ETERNAL STATE
We believe that all who have died will be raised at God’s appointed times. Those who are the children of God through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ will be raised at His coming to live with Him in joy and blessedness forever. Afterwards those who are not God’s children will be raised to everlasting condemnation and punishment because of their sins. All men will be judged according to the deeds done in the body, and there will be fitting rewards and punishments.
We believe that God’s children will persevere in the faith to the end; that because of God’s plan made before the creation of the world, because of the unceasing prayers of Jesus Christ, because of the continual working of the Holy Spirit, because of the inexhaustible grace of God, because of God’s faithfulness to the promises of His Word, all true believers will be brought safely to God’s home at last.
